Dental Initiative

In FY2008 Daughters of Charity Foundation of St. Louis concluded a three-year grant to Give Kids a Smile, an organization that provides a two-day dental clinic at a local university twice a year. The clinics are entirely volunteer driven, including the dentists who provide services. A wide variety of nonprofit agencies and schools are invited to bring children to the clinics for free dental screenings, exams, and cleanings. Funds from Daughters of Charity Foundation of St. Louis provided for coordination of free follow-up care for children who needed additional services such as fluoride treatments, fillings, and extractions.

Foundation staff will continue to explore options for proactive, initiative grants in the following areas:

Volunteer Dental Services
Support may be provided to selected programs in which dentists and dental hygienists volunteer their services to treat at-risk, underserved children.

In-School Prevention
Support may be provided to selected dental programs that serve children at the school site through portable dental clinics. The focus is on school districts with substantial percentages of at-risk, underserved children.

Dental Education
Support may be provided to educate children, youth, and/or their parents/caregivers about proper oral hygiene and nutrition.

Please note: Letters of Intent or unsolicited proposals will not be accepted for initiative grants.
